2025 Board of Directors Nominees

Dr. Karen Vreeman

Dr. Karen Vreeman attended the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, then completed a 1 year rotating internship between Tufts Cummings College of Veterinary Medicine Large Animal Medicine Department and Massachusetts Equine Clinic ambulatory practice. After the internship, she became an associate ambulatory veterinarian at Mark T Ketner DVM & Associates, where she works on a variety of patients including backyard pets, mares & foals (mostly thoroughbreds), and show horses.

Karen is interested in serving on the board of the NJAEP to be more involved in our veterinary community. She would like to contribute by assisting the NJAEP in organizing continuing education opportunities close to home, and providing occasions for the veterinarians in our state to meet each other to promote a sense of connection so that we can together address any issues that may arise involving or affecting our profession.

Dr. Michael Fugaro

Dr. Michael Fugaro opened Mountain Pointe Equine Veterinary Services, a full service equine ambulatory practice servicing New Jersey and Pennsylvania, in February of 2010. He graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Animal Science and is an alumnus from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine (Class of 1997). He completed a large animal internship at University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada and a large animal surgical residency at Purdue University. Dr. Fugaro is board certified in large animal surgery and is a member of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Previously, Dr. Fugaro was the resident veterinarian and a tenured Full Professor at Centenary College (now Centenary University) having affiliations in the Equine Studies and Math & Natural Sciences Departments. Dr. Fugaro has also taught adjunctively at Rutgers University in the Animal Science Department. Prior to teaching, Dr. Fugaro was one of the principal veterinarians representing the State Veterinarian for the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s Division of Animal Health. In addition, he remains active with the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association, and the New Jersey Association of Equine Practitioners.

Dr. Jonathan Furlong

I'm a 2017 DVM graduate from the University of Melbourne. After graduation, I completed a year and a half long Internship at Peterson & Smith in Ocala, FL, before returning to the family business in the summer of 2019. I spent the first year working primarily with Dr. Brendan Furlong, and since then have been working as a general ambulatory practitioner, splitting time between NJ and Ocala, FL. My primary veterinary interests include lameness and imaging, emergency care, and foal medicine. I particularly enjoy working with high performance sport horses, and have served as the team veterinarian for multiple world championships with US Driving, and travel to a handful of 4* and 5* three-day events with clients. I will be sitting my membership exam this summer for the ANZCVS (Large Animal Radiology).

I am applying to be a board member because I feel I represent a significant portion of NJ's equine veterinarians - a younger ambulatory practitioner working as an associate in a group practice, that splits time between NJ and FL. I also would like to represent our practice with the NJAEP, especially since none of our veterinarians have been involved in the past several years, and we would like to be more involved with our local veterinary community going forward. Lastly, I think my connections in the industry would be helpful in planning and gaining sponsorship for future CE events.

Dr. Grace Cagne

Please consider this brief letter as my official interest in joining the NJAEP

board. My name is Grace Cange, and I am currently an associate veterinarian at

B.W. Furlong & Associates. Originally from South Louisiana, I grew up on my

family’s beef cattle operation, which fostered my interest in Equine medicine. I

earned both my undergraduate degree and veterinary degree from Louisiana

State University. After completing a rotating internship at B.W. Furlong &

Associates, I chose to continue my career with the practice as an associate. My

professional interests include sports medicine and emergency care.

Joining the board would give me the opportunity to take on a leadership

role in a career that is deeply important to me. It is no secret that the equine

veterinary field is currently undergoing a long-overdue cultural transformation.

Now, more than ever, it is crucial to be actively involved in the decisions and

legislation that impact our daily lives. Being part of this board would allow me to

contribute to shaping the future of an industry I am passionate about.
